Dr. Kalaiarasan Ponnusamy joined SRM Institute of Science and Technology as Assistant Professor on May 29, 2025. He has an extensive research portfolio comprising more than 70 peer-reviewed publications with an H-index of 26 and over 3,600 citations. His research has been published in leading international journals, including Science, Nature, Nucleic Acids Research, and Briefings in Bioinformatics.

Prior to joining SRMIST, he served as Assistant Director at the National Centre for Disease Control (2021–2025), New Delhi, where he made significant contributions to India's SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance efforts under the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG). His work contributed to studies on the Delta and Omicron variants, viral evolution, and immune escape mechanisms.

At SRM, he leads the Synthetic Systems Virology Laboratory (SSV Lab), where his research focuses on developing integrative computational biology approaches to understand infectious diseases, cancer, metabolic disorders, rare genetic diseases, and host–pathogen interactions. His expertise spans genomics, transcriptomics, multi-omics data integration, systems biology, structural bioinformatics, molecular modeling, network biology, and machine learning-based predictive analytics.

His laboratory utilizes next-generation sequencing (NGS), computational systems biology, and artificial intelligence to investigate disease mechanisms, identify biomarkers, discover therapeutic targets, and develop predictive models for precision medicine. Current research activities include genome analysis, variant interpretation, regulatory genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, interactome analysis, microbiome research, antimicrobial resistance, and host–microbe interactions.

His systems biology research has advanced the understanding of biological networks, apoptosis regulation, miRNA-mediated signaling, and disease-associated regulatory mechanisms. In structural bioinformatics and computational drug discovery, his work focuses on protein structure analysis, molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulations, and structure-based identification of therapeutic candidates for infectious, genetic, neurological, and cancer-related diseases.

Through the integration of genomics, systems biology, and artificial intelligence, his research aims to bridge computational discoveries with translational biomedical applications, contributing to precision medicine, infectious disease surveillance, and therapeutic development.
